Rooibos - Aspalathi linearis

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a plant from the legume family (Leguminosae), which grows naturally as fynbos in the Cederberg region of South Africa. Since around 1930, rooibos has been cultivated for the production of a tea-like drink. The leaves of the plant are picked, crushed and then placed in the sun to oxidize. During this process, rooibos gets its characteristic reddish-brown color.

The name 'rooibos' comes from Afrikaans and is derived from the Dutch 'rood bos'.

Traditional use and skin care

In South Africa, rooibos has been used for centuries by the local population for its healing properties. It is traditionally used for skin problems such as itching, eczema, acne, sunburn and allergic reactions, because it soothes and calms the skin. Less well-known in Europe is that rooibos is also processed in skin care products. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory, skin-softening and antimicrobial properties, it is an excellent base for cosmetic applications.

Herbal tea without caffeine

Rooibos tea is a herbal tea that contains no caffeine and virtually no tannin, a substance that is responsible for the bitter taste in regular tea. Rooibos has a soft, slightly sweet taste and contains antioxidants such as vitamin C, calcium and iron. Many enthusiasts believe that rooibos tea has a slightly relaxing effect and is therefore suitable for drinking before going to sleep. In addition, rooibos is attributed with a beneficial effect on various health complaints, such as hay fever, asthma, allergies, stomach complaints, acne and eczema.

In South Africa, cold rooibos tea is even given to babies with intestinal cramps because of its soothing effect.
