Ashwagandha, officially known as Withania somnifera, belongs to the Magnoliophyta family and is also known as 'Indian ginseng' and 'winter cherry'. The name 'ashwagandha' literally means 'horse scent', due to its strong, earthy scent reminiscent of the scent of the herb's fresh roots. Legend in India states that the use of ashwagandha leads to the strength and vitality of a horse, a remarkable idea considering the Latin species name 'somnifera' can be translated as 'sleep-inducing'.
